Strikingly Moody Stair Structure with Glass Rails

The main entry staircase is positioned across from the front doorway and supports a striking two-tiered screen that also serves as a divider between the entryway and the living room beyond. The dark wood tones of the treads, screen and rail are a counterpoint to the glass banister and contrast with the off-white walls and abundant sunlight from the strategic incorporation of glass in the design. The overall light and shadow effect changes through the day with the shifting angles of the sun.

This collaboration is an excellent example of how we work best. While this was our first project with the builder, we work with this architect often, so the process was a smooth one. It’s critical to think about a project from a multitude of angles, including each component and how they will work together. By teaming together early in the process, we were able to examine the site, learn the architect’s vision, and ask the right questions to uncover the small details and considerations that made all the difference in the final result. Our ability to produce detailed 3-D renderings of the project before fabrication and execution was invaluable. 

For example, the spacing of the vertical slats was key. They needed to precisely align with the treads for structural stability and visual perfection. The railing involved multiple angles and it incorporated a complex “sandwich” design for the vertical posts in the glass banister to faithfully portray the architect’s vision. Through meticulous planning, coordination throughout, and our management of the onsite installation, we were able to ensure a trouble-free process and virtually flawless final result.
