Feature Stair and Rails

Newton, MA

In this striking stair and rails project, Modern Metal Solutions worked with an architect we have frequently partnered with whose work will also be featured in our next profile. The overall aesthetic is clean and modern contrasting with the warmth of natural wood and strength of the black steel.

The clean, modern design features serene light wood treads with turn down risers contrasted with clear glass balusters, patina-finished wall plates and panels, and a black offset stringer. A partial wall clad in black steel anchors the stair design while supporting a unique and functional wood shelf incorporated into a wrapped extension of the sleek wood banister.

As part of this project, we also fabricated and installed a contrasting black steel-wrapped open wall overlooking the second floor, mirrored by a similar treatment of the knee wall leading to the basement stairway. We also created a coordinating black steel portal leading from the kitchen into the dining room. The contrast effect is carried into the basement using a matte black shiplap effect in the support wall.

In addition to the stair and rails, we fabricated a number of other custom metal elements including column surrounds, posts, and metal shelving units for the basement bar.

In this collaboration, the architect created the initial design. Modern Metal Solutions then worked with the builder, Encore Properties, to drive the finer details of fabrication and installation to flawlessly integrate the architect’s vision into the final design. We’ve worked with Encore in the past, and our shared commitment to quality and attention to detail made this a smooth process.

The key here was our involvement from the beginning and the opportunity to lend our specific expertise throughout the project, working with different subcontractors to ensure the right prep work had been done and to anticipate any potential challenges. One example with this project is the turn down risers, which we recommended to reduce the stair gap to bring it to code requirements while adhering to the architect’s vision. Looking at this striking stairway, you only see the beautiful result.
