Little Things Mean a Lot, Big Lessons from Smaller Projects

While we love the challenge of the big projects we’re regularly involved in, the smaller jobs we take on offer some unique opportunities as well. Sometimes these small projects are big learning opportunities where we get to test and experiment with new materials and techniques or a chance to collaborate with a new partner. Either way, we love all our projects, big and small and are grateful for all the opportunities our customers and partners have brought to us over the past ten years. While every project is a learning opportunity, here are some of the experiences we’ve come to appreciate from our smaller jobs.

Deeper Connections

When you work with a smaller team, you really get a chance to know all the players involved. And while it’s still a professional environment, it’s great to get to know a little more about the people you’re working with and working for. Not only does this make for a pleasant work environment and foster strong connections for the future, it can give you insight into the job that will help produce a better end product, especially when it comes to residential work.

Opportunities for Creativity

At Modern Metal Solutions, we truly love a challenge because it offers a chance to use our skills to their fullest and get creative. Many of the smaller projects we take on use out-of-the-ordinary materials and/or techniques. These projects let us, and the designer or builder, try something new without risking a lot of resources and gives us experience to pull from for larger projects down the line.

Testing the Waters

Working with someone new, especially on a big, complicated project can be stressful. Small projects give everyone a chance to “get their feet wet” and see how well the teams work together. It’s also a great way to test out creative concepts on a smaller scale before making a larger investment.

Sharing Expertise

While there always is and should be an opportunity for this on all projects, I find it particularly relevant on these smaller ones. Because of the more intimate work environment, you’re able to get to know your collaborators better and share knowledge and provide guidance to each other. It’s rare that we walk away from any project without learning something, but these smaller jobs offer a chance for deep connections and learning.

Quality is Contagious

I mention this in another article, but it bears repeating: quality is contagious. Everyone who touches a project contributes to its quality, so fostering an environment where quality and a commitment to excellence is paramount. In the microcosm that’s the smaller project, this is a little easier to do with everyone being in such close contact throughout the life of the job, making these small projects a great place to not only gain some practice in these skills, but to establish relationships and expectations with vendors and partners for future projects.

Large or small, every project we take on is a learning opportunity and a true experience. We’re grateful for every opportunity and we look forward to many more years of providing the quality, creative service you’ve come to expect. If you’re planning a project that needs quality metal design and fabrication give us a call, we’d be happy to help.
